Should it be rebadged for an English-speaking market? Miramax - which regularly acquires Asian titles, but doesn't always seem to know what to do with them once it's bought them - smartly snapped it up, then dropped the ball. Shaolin Soccer is an inspired comedy about a soccer team with martial arts skills. Contrary to some reports, it's subtitled, not dubbed. Instead, it has limped, unheralded and unpreviewed, into a single city cinema, during the Melbourne International Film Festival, in an abbreviated "international" version. ![]() ![]() ![]() Made in 2001, a huge hit throughout Asia, it had the potential to be a breakthrough movie for Hong Kong writer-director-star Stephen Chiau (sometimes known as Chow). The story of Shaolin Soccer is a saga of missed opportunities. ![]()
